A growing number of US consumers now use a debit card instead of a credit card for most of their card-based purchases, fueling a rapid rise in debit card volume over the past several years. Surprisingly, the increased use of debit cards has not displaced traditional payment methods like cash and checks. The reason? Many consumers, especially those paying off credit card balances, are switching to debit cards to get or stay out of debt.
