Off-site ATMs are driving growth in cash-dispensing ATMs in Europe. During 2006, the sector grew by 11%, reaching a total of 148,175 off-site installations.
Retail Banking Research (RBR) has just published the third edition of ‘Off-Site ATMs Europe’ which provides the industry with its most detailed and reliable country‑by-country analysis of the off-site cash-dispensing ATM market in Europe. Key findings from the new report, which covers 27 countries, include: Europe home to 148,175 off-site ATMs (out of a total of 425,888 cash-dispensing ATMs) Russia witnesses 42% off-site growth ATM surcharging practised in only three European ATM markets NCR supplies 49% of European off-site sector Off-site ATMs to reach 220,000 by 2011 Europe home to 148,175 off-site ATMs In 2006, Europe experienced an 11% growth in its installed base of off-site ATMs, with over 15,000 new installations, reaching 148,175 off-site terminals by year end. 35% of ATMs in Europe are located off-site, although this proportion varies widely between countries. Nearly three quarters of Irish ATMs are located off-site in contrast to less than 1% of ATMs in Belgium. Off-site units make up more than half the total ATM market in 8 of the 10 CEE markets surveyed, but only 3 of 17 western Europe countries. Russia witnesses 42% off-site growth Russian banks were some of the largest deployers of off-site ATMs. They added nearly 7,000 new off-site cash-dispensing ATMs during the year, equating to domestic growth rate of 42%. Other countries showing strong growth in off-site ATMs were Bulgaria, Denmark, the Netherlands and the Ukraine, whose number of non-branch installations all grew by more than 20%. Despite the rapid growth witnessed in the off-site sectors of these countries, the UK still has by far the largest number of non-branch installations (41,540), accounting for 28% of the European total. ATM surcharging practised in only three European ATM markets Surcharging is currently practised in only three of the countries surveyed – the Netherlands, Russia and the UK. The vast majority of surcharging ATMs are installed by independent ATM deployers (IADs), although some banks in Russia and the UK also surcharge. Not all countries have legislation preventing surcharging at ATMs. However, the introduction of surcharging in most countries is not imminent due to fears of negative publicity and customer hostility. NCR supplies 49% of European off-site sector NCR supplies nearly a half of all off-site ATMs in the 27 European countries, with a market share of 49%. Its closest rival, Wincor Nixdorf, accounts for a further quarter of the market. Diebold is the third largest supplier of off-site ATM, with 12%. The top three manufacturers all have a presence in most of the countries surveyed, but Wincor Nixdorf is the only company to supply off-site ATM deployers to every country. Other significant manufacturers in this sector include Triton and De La Rue. Off-site ATMs to reach 220,000 by 2011 The installed base of off-site cash-dispensing ATMs in Europe is forecast to rise to more than 220,000 terminals by the end of 2011, 40% of the expected total. Over half of these will be found in Russia, the Ukraine and the UK. The principal drivers of off-site growth are: Further deployment on retail premises. Although this sector is already home to many off-site cash-dispensing ATMs, it is still believed to offer great potential. Such locations are becoming increasingly popular in Russia in particular, and are likely to become a prime target in the coming years; Growth in the economy and increased foreign investment in countries such as Poland, Romania and Turkey; Increased installations in rural areas and small towns, particularly where opening a branch would not be profitable. This is anticipated to be the case in countries including Greece, Poland, Turkey and Russia; Further deployment by non-banks. IADs are expected to enter the Finnish and Turkish markets during 2007; Increased custom from foreign travellers. For example, in Bulgaria and Croatia ATMs are likely to be installed in coastal and ski resorts to benefit from the increasing number of tourists to these countries.
