MasterCard has issued over 300 million Europay, MasterCard and Visa (EMV)-compliant MasterCard across the world. MasterCard's migration to EMV in Asia was caused by fraud prevention attempts across the region and government mandates in certain countries, such as Malaysia, South Korea and Indonesia. Ever since the completion of the EMV migration, in Malaysia card fraud has dropped by over 90 percent, below the global average basis point level. In the Asia-Pacific region, the rate of EMV chip cards has grown by 70 percent from 2005 till 2007. At the end of 2007, the card issuer reported that the EMV chip cards are accepted at more than 8 million locations across the world. The introduction of multi-application cards in the Asia-Pacific region was closely related to the competitive differentiation between banks in markets such as Taiwan, South Korea and Malaysia. |
