Ghana adopts cashless payments network PDF Print E-mail

The Central Bank of Ghana has introduced the electronic payment and settlement platform e-zwich which is managed by the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement System (GhIPSS).

As part of a pilot-phase, five out of the 25 banks across the country have begun to register customers, since they are the only ones which meet the criteria related to offering the card service. The e-zwich system requires the establishment of point-of-sale terminals and the training of bank and merchant staff for daily transactions management.

Services on the e-zwich platform are offered by a Stratus server running South Africa-based Net1's Universal Electronic Payment System (UEPS).

The e-zwich platform supports card inquiries, cash advance collections, money transfers and third-party bill payments. The e-zwich system also is expected to eventually support a cheque-clearing system, a gross settlement system and an automated clearing house system.

Nigeria, Malawi and South Africa are also part of the project.
