The State Bank of Vietnam connects two card payment systems PDF Print E-mail

The State Bank of Vietnam has connected two of Vietnam’s card payment systems for cashless payment transactions. The Vietnam National Financial Switching Joint Stock Company (Banknetvn) and the Smartlink alliances conducted the card system integration.

The Banknetvn-Smartlink card payment system includes the Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam, the Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam, the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of Vietnam and Techcombank.  As a result of the connection of the two ATM card alliances, clients of one member bank are able to use their cards at all ATMs of the four others.

By March 2008, the ATMs of the five banks mentioned above totalled 3,614, a number which represents 64 percent of ATMs across the Vietnamese market. The banks issued 8.6 million cards, accounting for 80 percent of the country's payment cards market. Banknetvn and Smartlink are to connect with the remaining member banks by Q3 2008. By that time, the two card alliances are expected to have over 4,500 ATMs, making up nearly 80 percent of the domestic market.

Almost 9.2 million cards will be issued, representing 86 percent of card payment market share in Vietnam.
