Credit card information of up to 38,000 customers has been stolen from the website of clothing firm Cotton Traders, according to BBC. The retailer says the number is ‘widely inaccurate’.
The addresses of customers have also been stolen by hackers, BBC suggests. Cotton Traders has not published a number of the affected customers but it did reveal that its website was attacked in January 2008 by e-criminals who hacked the website and stole the credit card details and addresses of thousands of customers. However, the merchant reported the January incident to Barclaycard and most cards were blocked. UK trade association for the payment industry APACS said the breach was serious because hackers accessed details for ‘card not present’ fraud. The case was being investigated by a specialist police force. Cotton Traders says all customer credit card is encrypted on its website. |
