MasterCard calls on House Committee to prevent price control rule PDF Print E-mail

Before the House Judiciary Committee's meeting regarding the Credit Card Fair Act of 2008, MasterCard urges the committee's members to consider the credible organisations and regulatory bodies that have expressed concerns regarding this legislation. MasterCard affirms that there is no need for government intervention and considers the US government's decision to set prices and negotiate the terms of contracts for private commercial entities inappropriate.

In addition to criticism from the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission, the Pentagon Federal Credit Union, Black Chamber of Commerce and Southern Christian Leadership Conference have declared they are against this legislation because they believe it will negatively affect their constituents. The Nordstrom retailer has also expressed opposition to the legislation.

The Pentagon Federal Credit Union motivated its position by stating that the legislation would increase costs and decrease card awards programmes for its members. The National Black Chamber of Commerce has declared that the bill would prevent its members from being successful in the market place. The Southern Christian Leadership Conference states that in case it is passed, the bill will increase interest rates for credit cardholders, harm local businesses and threaten community-based banks.
