In response to a study conducted by a travel assistance services firm, APACS has issued a press release, arguing that Spain and France are not top countries where British tourists become victims to card theft, as reflected in the "Forecast is hot for fraud this Bank Holiday" study. The latter reveals that for the July 2007 - July 2008 period, there have been 6,984 cases involving stolen plastic cards. 28 percent of them have been reported in Spain, 13 percent in France and 10 percent in US. Furthermore, the organisation provides its own statistics, indicated that fraud in France targeting cards issued in UK has dropped by GBP 4.3 million in two years. This is a consequence of the implementation of the same global chip and PIN system that is being deployed in the UK. In Spain, fraud has also dropped by GBP 3.9 million. APACS claims that CPP, when issuing its own study, has not taken into consideration the fact that most credit card fraud cases take place when card details are stolen in the UK and are used with a fraudulent purpose abroad. According to the APACS 2007 fraud figures for UK-issued cards, card fraud abroad peaks in US (GBP 24.6 million) followed by Italy (GBP 9.6 million), Australia (GBP 8.2 million), France (GBP 7.3 million) and Spain (GBP 5.7 million). |
