Coca-Cola Bottling Company, a division of Coca Cola, is installing MasterCard PayPass payment terminals to more vending machines across Canada. So far, only 400 vending machines have been equipped with MasterCard PayPass technology. By 2010, the company expects to add this kind of technology to 5,000 machines. The PayPass payment terminals are being installed on the front of Coca-Cola vending machines, near the cash receptacle. MasterCard PayPass is an EMV compatible, contactless payment feature that provides cardholders with a simpler way to pay by tapping a payment card or other payment device, such as a phone or key fob, on a point-of-sale terminal reader rather than swiping or inserting a card. No signature is required and traditional magnetic stripe credit cards are also accepted. Canadians are able to use PayPass at Rabba Fine Foods, Cineplex Odeon, Tim Hortons, Petro-Canada, Pioneer Petroleums, Coca-Cola vending machines, Loblaw Companies stores across Canada. By the end of 2008, Staples, Sobeys and McDonald's restaurants are also to introduce PayPass. Q2 2008 registered nearly 37 million MasterCard PayPass cards and devices at over 122,000 merchants across the world. There are a number of PayPass trials in 25 countries, including Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Spain, the UK and the US. |
